Policy Statement

Batten and Beam Ltd is committed to delivering the highest standards of workmanship, service, and client care across all building, restoration, and heritage projects. Our goal is to consistently meet or exceed client expectations while preserving the integrity, character, and long-term performance of the buildings we work on. We achieve this through careful planning, skilled craftsmanship, rigorous quality control processes, and continuous improvement throughout the company.


1. Our Quality Objectives

We aim to:

  • Deliver workmanship that meets the highest industry and heritage-conservation standards.
  • Complete projects safely, on time, and within agreed budgets.
  • Use high-quality, appropriate materials—especially traditional materials for heritage works.
  • Maintain clear communication with clients, architects, surveyors, and conservation officers.
  • Ensure all personnel understand and follow quality procedures.
  • Continuously develop skills, training, and working practices.


2. Responsibilities

Directors

  • Provide leadership and resources to support high standards of quality.
  • Ensure this policy is implemented, maintained, and reviewed annually.
  • Set expectations for professional conduct and craftsmanship.


Site Supervisors & Project Leads

  • Ensure work is carried out in line with specifications, drawings, and heritage guidance.
  • Monitor workmanship at all stages and address quality issues promptly.
  • Complete quality inspections, checklists, and sign-off documentation.
  • Communicate clearly with clients and team members.


Employees & Subcontractors

  • Follow all quality assurance procedures and site-specific requirements.
  • Carry out work to the highest standard and report defects immediately.
  • Use correct materials, tools, and techniques.
  • Protect existing heritage fabric and ensure minimal disturbance.
  • No compromise will be accepted on standards of workmanship.


3. Quality Control Procedures

3.1 Pre-Start

  • Detailed review of drawings, schedules, and heritage constraints.
  • Confirmation of appropriate materials (lime, timber, lead, breathable finishes).
  • Site induction and briefing for all personnel.


3.2 During Works

  • Regular inspection of craftsmanship at key stages.
  • Monitoring compliance with building regulations and conservation advice.
  • Recording materials used to ensure authenticity and traceability.
  • Ensuring accuracy of structural repairs, reinstatement, and finishes.

3.3 Completion

  • Full inspection and snagging process.
  • Client walk-through and satisfaction checks.
  • Handover of maintenance guidance, materials information, and warranties.
  • Collection of client feedback for continual improvement.


4. Materials & Suppliers

We will ensure:

  • Materials are sourced responsibly and are appropriate for the building fabric.
  • Lime products, timber, leadwork, and specialist materials meet industry and heritage standards.
  • Suppliers and subcontractors are vetted for quality and reliability.
  • Modern materials are only used where appropriate and never in a way that compromises breathability or long-term building performance.


5. Training & Competence

To maintain the highest standards, Batten and Beam Ltd will:

  • Provide ongoing training in traditional building skills.
  • Encourage continued professional development (CPD) in conservation techniques.
  • Ensure employees and subcontractors are competent for their tasks.
  • Support staff in gaining relevant heritage and construction accreditations.
